We are Alive
After 8 days without electricity or phone due to the horrible ice and snow storm we had, we FINALLY got both back yesterday. I have to say, it was one of the worst winter storms I have been through. First, we got 30 straight hours of freezing rain. It did not let up once. By that time, we had at least 1-2 inches of ice on everything. All you could hear was tree limb after tree limb breaking off trees and falling to the ground or hitting houses. Power poles were breaking in two, trees were being ripped up out of the ground, and power lines were being snapped in two due to the weight of the ice on everything. For hours, all you could see was turquoise flashes in the sky due to power transformers being blown and power lines being snapped. It was kind of scary trying to take the dog for a short walk to go to the bathroom, because I would hear crackle-crackle. . . crash. . . see bright blue flashes and . . . then hear grrrrrrrrrrr from the transformers blowing. It was pretty scary. Even after all that mess, we got about 6-8 inches of snow on top of that. I could not find one tree in the entire town that did not have damage to it. Every single one had limbs broken off everywhere, were ripped down, or had broken in two. We roughed it out for 3 nights at home without electricity, but the temperature in the house got down to about 55 and it just got too bone chilling not being able to warm up. We couldn't cook anything hot to eat unless we went to my parents house to cook on the grill (but, by the time I got it home it was cold) and nothing was open to buy anthing. Like I said, we finally gave up and went to my parents house to stay. They at least had a generator so we had heat during the day and hot food to eat and a warm bed to sleep in. By yesterday, we had lost half the food in our big freezer (thankfully, our freezer is really good and we were able to keep everything cold until we had a day of 50+ temps) and all but 4 of our fish died (about 15). There was one good thing that came out of the bad storm though. . . I got a job. If you didn't already know, Erick and I have had a HORRIBLE string of BAD luck with jobs this year and have both been unemployed (except for being substitute teachers about 2-3 days a week) for a while. The economy hasn't helped. . . and the economy out her really hasn't helped. Anyway, I start my new job on Monday. Although it isn't related to my Info. Tech. degree, it is a job and a paycheck. I ran into someone I know at the laundromat (and neither of us would have been there if we had power at home) and she asked if I was still looking for work. That was Saturday, I went to see her on Tuesday and was hired on the spot, and I start on Monday. She has a massage therapy business, her husband is a lawyer and they both run an Abstract and Title business. So, I'm going to be working for them and doing various legal stuff, doing abstract and title work (doing title searches, etc for real estate companies), and doing basic office work. The best part is that it will only take me 2 minutes to get to work from home. I guess I'll have to start putting my makeup on at home now instead of in the car on the way :). Thought I'd catch you up on where we've been. Hopefully I'll be able to get caught up again soon.

Congratulations on the job! I know what a weight off your shoulders that must be.
