Shadow Puppets and Dancing in the Strobe Lights

What a time it has been the past 24 hours. Yesterday, we started getting the front end of a bad winter storm. It started raining, then freezing, then sleeting, then raining, then freezing, and on and on and on. Well, the power went off at about 6 pm last night. You have to remember, it is probably about 20 degrees outside. Well, Wesley did not like the total darkness at all. . . until we found the flashlights. We ended up making a pretty fun night of it. We made shadow puppets on the ceiling (he moved his fingers all around and growled and made animal noises), flashed the flashlights around like strobe lights, read stories with the flashlights, and, best of all, Wesley got to sleep with Mommy and Daddy. Did I mention that the power never came back on last night. . . hence, Wesley sleeping in the big kid's bed. Boy, I hope that never happens again. What fun that was, getting kicked in the head all night. It's bad enough to hear Erick snoring all night, but on top of that I got to hear Wesley slurping on his pacifier too. I'm the type of person who NEEDS white noise to sleep, and, with no power, I wasn't able to run my little fan to provide me with that comfort. Finally, at about 3:30 am Erick was gracious enough to take Wesley to the other room and sleep with him in the recliner. At about 7 am we got some power, but not everything. We found that the sump pump had stopped working and the battery backup failed to come on, so the water was about to overflow in the basement. Erick had to make many trips up and down the steps bailing water before we had a major problem. Still, the entire county doesn't have power and we only have partial power. Thankfully, we were able to get our heat going and a few other things. As I sit here, I hear the rumble of generators and the crashing of ice covered branches and trees falling. Thankfully, our only catastrophe was a big tree branch broke our swing set. I don't see any relief anytime soon, for it is only supposed to be about 15 degrees tomorrow. All in all, the little adventure of shadow puppets and a night without tv was a little fun. . . although I wouldn't want to do it all the time. How did everyone use to make it without power. . . without Barney (haha-Wesley couldn't understand why he couldn't get Barney to come on). . . and without heat? I guess everyone used to be more creative than they are now, huh?
