Wesley Didn't Like the Fireworks

For the 4th of July, Erick and I decided to take Wesley down to the riverfront for the fireworks display. We thought that maybe this year he might like the lights and the colors since last year he screamed through almost the entire fireworks extravaganza (and he and I were inside the house) at his Great Uncle Jon's in Oregon. We thought wrong. First, we pulled out the lawn chairs and got set up. The real show had not even started yet, only the side shows by the spectators, and he kept saying "Car-Car-Car" and pointing towards the car. Finally, we gave in so we didn't disturb our firework neighbors. So, we went to the car hoping this would soothe him. Since it was 90+ degrees out, we needed to keep the windows down so we didn't suffocate. Well, the noise was still too much for him so we rolled them up and turned on the A/C. That was better, but still not good enough. He tried to sit on Daddy's lap. . . still too scary. Finally, he got down and crawled into the back seat floor board. He huddled over (as if he were in a tornado or earthquake position to take cover) and covered his head. I felt so bad, but there was no where we could really go. Every now and then, he would peek at the fireworks but would immediately go back to the duck and cover position. He tried to climb back on Daddy's lap, but that wouldn't last so back down to take cover. He really seemed like he wanted to try and watch the fireworks and kept taking peeks, but just still wasn't sure. I guess there is always next year. I'm not a big fireworks fan myself, so I'm not too disappointed if he doesn't beg to go every year from now on out. Call me crazy, but I would like the fireworks better if they didn't make so much noise. . . or maybe if people wouldn't set their kids loose to set off bottle rockets aimlessly. . . or, maybe if they didn't make so much noise (yeah, I guess that's the real reason). Boy, I'm starting to sound like an old fuddy-dud.
